WHAT IS MMA?

Mixed martial arts combines multiple combat disciplines under one ruleset. The fight can move from striking range to the clinch to the ground in seconds.

The three broad ranges

Striking: punches, kicks, knees and other permitted attacks depending on the rules.

Clinch: fighting for position at close range, including takedowns and control against the cage.

Ground: positional grappling, submissions and ground striking where permitted.

How fights are won

MMA bouts can end by knockout, technical knockout, submission or judges’ decision. The UFC’s introduction to MMA also describes unanimous, split and majority decisions. citeturn0search4

Why styles mix

A fighter may use wrestling to force a ground exchange, BJJ to threaten submissions, boxing to manage range or kicking to disrupt movement. Modern MMA is less about staying inside one discipline and more about making those skills work together.
